The Process...
Design & Permits
Make sure your drawings are clear and
complete. This phase is the key to a good
contract and job well done. A good set of
drawings and specifications is important
in all phases of permitting and
construction.
Estimates
Only accept estimates from qualified licensed
contractors. Compare estimates by value, quality,
and references.
Timetable
Discuss your time schedule with your
contractor. Make sure you understand the
timetable for all phases of construction. And
have a realistic completion date.
Construction
During construction there will be many ups and
downs. In the beginning everyone is excited to
start and then rushing to finish. Just keep in
mind that speed doesn't equal a job well done.
And communication is the key to a good
relationship with your contractor.
Warranty
A one year warranty on most projects is
customary. This is a great way for the
contractor to make sure their clients are
completely satisfied with their projects.
Punch List
At the end of your project a list should be
developed by the homeowner and the
contractor. This list provides the contractor
with an organized method of finishing all
remaining details of the project.

Starting
Most construction and remodeling projects
start as a result of a household reaching a
stage in the life cycle that triggers the need to
do "something" about housing.
Wish List
Make a list of all the reasons you want to
start your project. Be sure to include your
must haves, would be nice, and under no
circumstances.
Contract
A clear and detailed contract is important
to protect the homeowner and the
contractor from "misunderstandings"
between both parties. Have an attorney
review all contracts before signing. And
get everything in writing.
